The Heart of Santa Rosa is amid an exciting period of revitalization, with several new developments. Among these is the recent completion of the Courthouse Square reunification and the Hotel E on the Square. Courthouse Square is a center of social and cultural activity, special events and leisure lunches year-round.

The SMART Train serves Downtown Santa Rosa and makes multiple stops each day at the Railroad Square Depot, just a short distance from Courthouse Square. The SMART Train travels to and from San Rafael in Marin County, with many stops along the way including Novato, Petaluma, Rohnert Park to the south and the Sonoma County Airport area to the north. Soon the train will travel further north to Windsor and eventually Healdsburg and Coverdale.

Downtown Santa Rosa is enjoyed by local businesspeople and area residents, as well as visitors to Sonoma County from throughout the world. Among the many attractions includes the Russian River Brewing Company, the Wednesday Night Farmers Markets with artisans, food and live entertainment, children’s movie nights on the Square, car shows, the holiday ice rink, street vendors, and an abundance of fine dining and casual restaurants for every palate.

The 520 Third Street building is adjacent to Courthouse Square and within a few blocks of the SMART Train and City, State and Federal government offices. The Sonoma County Visitors Center is also located at the SMART Train Depot in Railroad Square. The Central Business District of Santa Rosa is also home to local residents, approximately 15 banks, the main U.S. Post Office, retail stores, the Sonoma County Museum, wine tasting, movie theaters, coffee houses, craft brew pubs, night clubs and the Santa Rosa Plaza Regional Shopping Mall. Santa Rosa Plaza features a Macy’s, Apple Store, Disney Store, Starbuck’s, clothing stores, a food court and many small specialty retail shops.

One unique feature of Downtown Santa Rosa is the Prince Memorial Greenway along Santa Rosa Creek, which includes a pedestrian and bicycle path connecting Santa Rosa to the town of Sebastopol 7 miles to the west. The Greenway provides cyclists and walkers access to daytime exercise along the creek.

The center of Sonoma County government and economic activity is Santa Rosa, the County seat. Santa Rosa and Sonoma County are the largest business, retail, medical centers between San Francisco and Portland, OR. The County of Sonoma has a population of approximately 500,000 and Santa Rosa with 177,000 residents is the 5th largest city in the Bay Area and largest in Sonoma County.

Sonoma County is renowned for its incredible natural beauty, technology, and bioscience firms, and especially its wine and visitor industries with world-class food and beverage enjoyed by visitors and residents alike. Sonoma County has over 270 wineries in 16 American Viticultural Areas (AVA’s) nestled between the Mayacamas Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The County is home to a burgeoning craft brew industry, featuring widely known beers from Russian River Brewing (Pliny the Younger), HenHouse, and Lagunitas to name just a few. The economic impact of the wine and craft brew industries of Sonoma County is estimated to be between $15-20 billion annually including sales, wages, and tourism revenue to the County.

Sonoma County residents and visitors appreciate the Mediterranean climate, exceptional air quality and four distinct weather seasons. Sonoma County is bordered on the south by Marin County, to the east by Napa County and to the north by Mendocino County. There is easy access to San Francisco and Oakland, and the entire San Francisco Bay Area, with Sonoma County serving as a commercial and transportation hub of the North Bay.

During the last 35 years, the popularity and significance of Sonoma County wines have given rise to a variety of cultural amenities and attractions including the exceptional culinary industry, wine tasting, cycling, golf, and world class performers at the Green Music Center and Luth Burbank Center for the Arts. Sonoma County has become a focal point for performing and fine arts.

Sonoma County was also the home of Peanuts cartoonist Charles Schulz, with his many works featured at the Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa. The Charles Schulz Sonoma County Airport is named after Mr. Schulz. The airport offers flights to and from Los Angeles, Orange County, Portland, Seattle, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Dallas and Burbank.
